King Charles is currently seeking treatment for an enlarged prostate. The announcement was made by Buckingham Palace.
"In common with thousands of men each year, The King has sought treatment for an enlarged prostate. His Majesty's condition is benign, and he will attend hospital next week for a corrective procedure."
"The King’s public engagements will be postponed for a short period of recuperation."
It's understood he wanted to share the diagnosis, to encourage men, who could be experiencing symptoms, to get checked.
A royal source confirmed the King will still be able to fulfil his constitutional requirements and duties.
This news comes just hours after Kensington Palace announced Kate Middleton was hospitalised after undergoing a "planned abdominal surgery."
"The surgery was successful, and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days, before returning home to continue her recovery. Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter."
"The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private. Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness’ progress when there is significant new information to share."
"The Princess of Wales wishes to apologize to all those concerned for the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements. She looks forward to reinstating as many as possible, as soon as possible."
It's understood her issue was non-cancerous. After she is discharged from the hospital, she is expected to recover at home in Windsor.
Prince William has also lightened his public duties, to support Kate during her recovery, and take care of their three children.
He will also not undertake official duties while she is in hospital, or during the early days of her recovery.
Queen Camilla has continued royal duty after Buckingham Palace announced King Charles would head to the hospital next week.
She visited the Aberdeen Art Gallery in Aberdeen, Scotland, the day after the announcement.
“Good morning, it was quite a frosty journey. Sorry, we're a bit late, I'm afraid."
“How is His Majesty?" asked Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeen Dr. David Cameron.
"He's fine, thank you very much. Looking forward to getting back to work."
While at the gallery, she opened a new 'Safe Space,' which is set to help provide guidance to people if they suspect someone is living with domestic abuse.
This marked her first public outing since the news of the King's health was revealed.
Most recently, the King and Queen were seen together driving to Crathie Kirk near Balmoral.
The church is their go-to while in Scotland.
