Andre Braugher, ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Star Dead At Age 61
Andre Braugher, known for his role on 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine,' has passed away at the age of 61.
He died following a battle with lung cancer. Further details have yet to be released. It's remains unknown when the actor was diagnosed.
After the news of his passing, co-star Terry Crews released a tribute on social media.
“Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent. This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much.”
“I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like.”
Born in Chicago, Andre earned a B.A. from Stanford University, and an M.F.A. from Juilliard.
He first became known as Detective Frank Pembleton in 'Homicide: Life on the Street,' airing from 1992 to 1998.
In 1997 and 1998, he received two Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He also earned two Television Critics Association awards.
Later on, he earned an Emmy for Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actor in a Mini-Series, as well as a Golden Globe for his role in 'Thief' in 2008.
He then starred on 'Men of a Certain Age' from 2009 to 2011, before he was cast as Captain Ray Holt on 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' for eight seasons.
The show aired from 2013 to 2021, and throughout that time, he won two Critics Choice Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, as well as four Emmy nominations.
Most recently, he starred as Dean Baquet on 'She Said,' which is a retelling of two journalists whose reporting led to the prosecution of Harvey Weinstein, sparking the #MeToo movement.
In 2022, he appeared on the sixth season on 'The Good Fight' and made his directorial debut with 'Love Songs.'
He met his wife, Ami, while he was starring on 'Homicide: Life on the Street.'
The two married in the early 90s, and shared sons Michael, Isaiah, and John. Andre is survived by his wife, sons, brother Charles, and mother Sally.
Instead of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to the Classical Theatre of Harlem.

Viola Davis was one among many who have shared tributes to the late actor.
She said, "Heartbreaking. You went way too soon. I loved every minute of working with you....your talent, your bottomless heart, your love of your family....your wife. You were a great man. God bless your children, your beautiful wife ..... You will be missed Andre 💔🕊️🙏🏿."
Shonda Rhimes said she was "deeply saddened by the news."
"I mourn not only the loss of an extraordinary actor but, more profoundly, the departure of a warm and kind soul. His talent was undeniable, but it was his genuine kindness that truly set him apart. Rest well."
