Richard Roundtree Dies At Age 81

Actor Richard Roundtree, known for his starring role in the 'Shaft' film franchise, has died at the age of 81.

He passed away in his LA home, with family by his side. His death comes after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

"Richard's work and career served as a turning point for African American leading men in film. The impact he had on the industry cannot be overstated."

Richard was born on July 9th, 1942 in New York, and began his acting career in the early 1960s.

He became a ground-breaking actor after portraying detective John Shaft. He was 29 at the time, becoming a star.

He also appeared in numerous movies and TV series, including films 'Inchon' and 'Seven,' as well as shows 'Roots,' 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,' and 'Desperate Housewives.'

Samuel L Jackson, who appeared in the Shaft reboot and a 2019 instalment of the franchise with him, described him as "the prototype, the best to ever do it."

"His passing leaves a deep hole not only in my heart, but I'm sure a lotta y'all's, too. Love you Brother, I see you walking down the Middle Street in Heaven & Isaac's Conducting your song."

Richard was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993 and underwent a double mastectomy.

He is survived by four daughters, Kelli, Nicole, Taylor, and Morgan, his son John, and at least one grandchild.
