Dick Butkus Cause Of Death Revealed

Bears legend Dick Butkus passed away at the age of 80 in October after suffering a stroke, according to a death certificate. It lists a "cerebrovascular accident” as the cause of death. This is more commonly known as a stroke. 

The death certificate also lists secondary causes, including an irregular heartbeat and thick/hardened arteries.

Butkus had been dealing with an irregular heartbeat in the weeks before his death. He has also had issues with his arteries for years.

The death certificate also mentioned his coronary bypass surgery that was done in 2001. 

Butkus was pronounced dead at the scene, after authorities were called to his home in Malibu on October 5th. His death was announced a day later.

The Bears and Butkus’ family announced his death in a statement later that day. 

The Commanders held a moment of silence before the game that night.

Butkus is widely regarded as one of the greatest linebackers in NFL history. He also holds the Bears’ franchise record with 27 fumble recoveries. 

Over his career, he was an eight time Pro Bowler, and five time All Pro. He was limited to nine seasons due to a knee injury. He spent the entire time with the Bears.
