CoCo Lee, Voice of Mulan, Dead by Suicide
Singer-songwriter CoCo Lee has passed away at the age of 48 following a suicide attempt. Her older sisters confirmed the news.
"With great sadness, we are here [to] break the most devastating news: CoCo had been suffering from depression for a few years but her condition deteriorated drastically over the last few months. Although CoCo sought professional help and did her best to fight depression, sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her."
"On 2 July, she [attempted] suicide at home and was sent to the hospital. Despite the best efforts of the hospital team to rescue and treat her from her coma, she finally passed away on 5 July."
CoCo was a well-known pop star in Asia with the highlights of her career happening in the 1990s and early 2000s.
He debut album 'CoCo Lee' became the best selling album in Asia in 1996, after she was signed by Sony Music Entertainment.
She began as a Mandopop singer, but went on to released albums in Cantonese, and English.
'Do You Want My Love' was a single that made it onto the U.S. music charts, allowing her to release her first English album 'Just No Other Way' in 1999.
Her song 'A Love Before Time' went on the be featured in the film 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' and was nominated for 'Best Original Song' during the 2001 Academy Awards, to which she then performed the song live.
She voiced Mulan is the Mandarin version of Disney's 'Mulan' and sung the Mandarin version of the song 'Reflection.'
CoCo then went on to appear in three films, including 'Lee Xin's Master of Everything,' and 'No Tobacco.'
She was married to businessman Bruce Rockowitz from Canada, who was also former chief executive of Li & Fung, and she became stepmother to his two daughters. They never had children of their own.
Her sisters noted this year marks the 30th anniversary of her singing career.
"CoCo is also known to have worked tirelessly to open up a new world for Chinese singers in the international music scene, and she went all out to shine for the Chinese."
