Travis Scott Won't Face Criminal Charges For Astroworld Tragedy
Reports have surfaced that Travis Scott won't be facing criminal charges over the Astroworld tragedy that took place in 2021, where 10 people died.
Over a year after the deadly crowd surge, a grand jury has decided the outcome after viewing and hearing evidence from prosecutors, issuing six no-bills, which means there will be no criminal charges filed.
Before the hearing, an attorney for Travis stated, "nothing Travis did or failed to do fits within the Texas criminal code."
After the ruling, the attorney said the decision "confirms what we have known all along—that Travis Scott is not responsible for the Astroworld tragedy."
"Now that this chapter is closed, we hope for the government efforts to focus on what is most important—stopping future heartbreaking tragedies like AstroWorld from ever occurring again."
Back in November 2021, 10 concertgoers, the youngest, nine-year old Ezra Blount, died after an incident took place during Travis' concert.
A press conference held by authorities confirmed a crowd of around 50,000 people "began to compress towards the front of the stage" which caused panic and injuries. "People began to fall out, become unconscious, and it created additional panic."
It was revealed that the victims died of compression asphyxia, with the manner of death listed as an accident. An additional 2,400 people required medical attention and treatment.
Travis broke his silence one day after saying he was "absolutely devastated."
"My prayers go out to the families and all those impacted by what happened at Astroworld Festival. Houston PD has my total support as they continue to look into the tragic loss of life. I am committed to working together with the Houston community to heal and support the families in need. Thank you to Houston PD, Fire Department and NRG Park for their immediate response and support. Love You All."
The months following saw several lawsuits filed against Travis along with Live Nation, Epic Records, Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation, and several other businesses and event organisers.
A lawyer for one victim's family said in 2022 they reached a confidential agreement with the parties involved in the case.
Travis has issued a "general denial" of claims and asked for multiple suits to be dismissed, however other proceedings continue.
