Writer and showrunner for Dear White People, Jaclyn Moore is in the process of boycotting Netflix after it released Dave Chappelle's new stand-up special, which happened to contain some jokes aimed towards transgender people.

The Closer showcases several minutes of Dave Chappelle spreading jokes surrounding transgender people and the LGBTQ community.

In one particular moment, Dave explained that he was "team TERF" which basically stands for "trans-exclusionary radical feminist." He also joked about trans women's genitalia at one point.

He also mentioned that "gender is a fact" and went into a story about beating up a lesbian woman.

These jokes were being made during a historic year for anti-transgender legislation, which was released and brought into at least 33 states in the U.S. It was also less than a year after a record number of transgender people, most being trans women of colour, were killed.

Jaclyn went on to tweet she "will not work with Netflix as long as they continue to put out and profit from blatantly and dangerously homophobic content."

Representatives for Dave Chappelle and Netflix have yet to comment.

During the last season of her show Dear White People, Jaclyn transitioned. She explained that she was met with respect and support from her colleagues.

After seeing Dave Chappelle's latest special, she decided to terminate her relationship with Netflix. She has tweeted saying that Dave was once "one of my heroes" but the jokes he decided to make "have real world consequences" for many including trans women. These consequences include violence and hatred.

"So when he says people should be mad a trans woman won a 'Woman of the Year' award....When he misgenders....When he says he should've told that mother her daughter WAS A DUDE...I just can't...I can't be a part of a company that thinks that's worth putting out and celebrating."

She has also explained that the language Dave uses in the special is "the same language used by people who seek to hurt us."

"I do believe in freedom of speech. I really do. But I have the freedom of speech to say that somebody's speech bothers me, and I don't want to work with a company that promotes that speech. It's dangerous. It's dangerous language. I can't say it any clearer."

GLAAD, the LGBTQ media advocacy organisation also didn't like the comments and jokes Dave decided to use for his special.

"Dave Chappelle's brand has become synonymous with ridiculing trans people and other marginalized communities. Negative reviews and viewers loudly condemning his latest special is a message to the industry that audiences don't support platforming anti-LGBTQ diatribes. We agree."

Netflix has yet to comment, although one of its employees, Terra Field, a senior software engineer, has expressed her views surrounding the issue of Dave Chappelle's special, saying he ridiculed the existence of trans people.

"Promoting TERF ideology (which is what we did by giving it a platform yesterday) directly harms trans people, it is not some neutral act. This is not an argument with two sides. it is an argument with trans people who want to be alive and people who don't want us to be."

She concluded her opinions with the names of all 38 trans and gender non-conforming individuals who lost their lives due to this issue and were killed throughout 2021.
