Boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata Dead At 18

Event organiser Groupe Yvon Michel has revealed that 18-year-old boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata has died following injuries gained in a boxing match against Canada's Marie-Pier Houle. She passed away on Thursday, September 2nd.

"It is with great sadness and torment that we have learned, from a representative of her family, that Jeanette Zacarias Zapata passed away this afternoon at 3:45 p.m. The entire team at Groupe Yvon Michel team is extremely distressed by this painful announcement. We would like to offer our most sincere condolences to her family, loved ones and especially her husband Jovanni Martinez who was at her bedside until her last moments."

It has been revealed that Jovanni was "devastated and extremely upset" about losing his wife unexpectedly and didn't want to comment further.

Jeanette suffered multiple power punches while in the corner of the ring during the August 28th matchup at the GYM Gala International Boxing Event. 

One final right hook caused her mouthguard to fly out and she was left unable to return to her corner.

She was assessed by a trainer, received on-site medical assistance before she was rushed to hospital.

Her opponent posted a separate private pst on social media saying, "Never, ever, is the intention of seriously injuring an opponent in my plans. My sincere thoughts go to my opponent, Jeanette Zacarias Zapata, as well as to her family."

Not long after the announcement of her death, the boxing community spread the love, condolences and tributes.
