New daughter to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, Lilibet Diana has finally been added to the royal succession line, making her eighth in line for the throne.

Seven weeks after her birth, she has been added behind her big brother Archie, two places behind her father who is currently sixth in line.

Royal spouses seem to not be part of the line, as Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton, Mike Tindall, or Sarah 'Fergie' Ferguson, Duchess of York haven't appeared on the list.

The line of succession dates back to the 17th century, with the reign of William III (William of Orange). The most recent emendation was in 2013, where the purpose was to end the system of male primogeniture, the system that automatically placed males ahead of their sisters in the succession line.

It also removed the rule that a royal could not keep their position if they married a Roman Catholic. These changes came into play in March 2015, but only apply to royal children that were born after October 28th, 2011.

It has been understood that Lilibet's position isn't set in stone. She, along with her brother, will slip down the line if any of Prince William and Kate Middleton's children become parents in the future.

As of the moment, Prince George holds place three, Princess Charlotte holds place four, and Prince Louis holds place five. The only two ahead of them are Prince William who holds place two, and Prince Charles who holds place one.

Prince Charles is also the longest-serving heir apparent in the history of Britain. He has held the position since February 6th, 1952, when he was three-years-old, which is when Princess Elizabeth acceded to the throne.
